Solar Cigarettes also claims its unique additives will give you more energy and help you lose weight. Can an e-cig possibly offer all this?

The company explains that its Life Changing Solar Cigarette Vitamin B pack, for example, “gives you your daily vitamins and nicotine with every puff,” while the Coenzyme Q10 Cartridge Pack’s benefits are a bit more vague: “CoQ10 benefits include playing a role in the treatment and prevention of a host of age-related disorders.”

Solar Cigarette considers its Full Flavored Ginseng Cartridge Pack to be one of its most healthful flavors, explaining that ginseng is “used to reduce the effects of stress, improve performance, boost energy levels, enhance memory, and stimulate the immune system.”

The site features a lengthy testimonial by a customer named Erik who credits Solar Cigarettes with helping him lose 75 pounds after switching from traditional cigarettes to Solar Cigarettes, resulting in him getting married and having more motivation.

Solar Cigarette’s website doesn’t explain how, exactly, its products promote weight loss, nor does it get very specific on its other health benefit claims. Language saying an ingredient “is said to treat pulmonary problems” is not the same as saying “Solar Cigarettes will cure pulmonary problems.”

Solar Cigarette can’t offer proof of the rather outlandish health benefits it attributes to its products, but it can safely make the claim that other e-cig companies make: It’s much better for you than smoking.

And the company will even throw in a “smoking buddy” to support your decision to quit.

Lorillard Tobacco Company is the third largest cigarette manufacturers in the United States. They are also the oldest tobacco company, founded in 1760.

According to reports, on Monday February 13, Tom’s wife heard a loud bang, “like a firecracker”, shortly followed by her husband’s screams. She quickly ran into the study to find that Tom’s electronic cigarette had exploded in his face. After being called to the scene, the North Bay Fire District found a badly wounded Mr. Holloway, and noticed that “the debris that flew around the room was so hot, it melted everything it touched.” In the end, Tom Holloway lost much of his front teeth, a part of his tongue and suffered burns on his face.

It was indeed a tragedy for this two-year vaper and his family, but with over 2.5 million Americans using electronic smokeless cigarettes every day, and after nine years since the first electronic cigarette was developed and sold, there had been no reports about a device exploding anywhere in the world. The question then is: Why now and why Mr. Holloway? And more importantly for current and prospective vapers, how likely is it to happen again?

What happened to Tom Holloway was, by all accounts, a freak accident. However, freak accidents do happen all the time, and there are several documented cases of li-ion batteries exploding in a wide variety of devices, ranging from cell phones to electric shavers. Just last year, Colgate had to recall one of its best selling toothbrushes in Canada because, much like Tom’s electronic cigarette, they were exploding in their user’s mouths.

In the 10 days since the story broke out, there has been widespread speculation as to what actually caused Mr. Holloway’s electronic cigarette to explode. Friends and neighbors of the family have come out to talk about the incident and the device he was using at the time. All the signs and testimonies thus far point to a modified electronic cigarette crafted by Holloway himself, using two stacked and unprotected batteries. Both modified electronic cigarettes, also known simply as mods, and unprotected rechargeable batteries increase the risk of a mishap, since they do not include built-in circuit boards designed to prevent any electrical malfunctions.

This, of course, does not mean Tom Holloway was careless or caused his accident. Hundreds of vapers have been using the same setup as he was for years, and this is the first time we hear of such an incident. The truth is that, while he could have reduced his risk of mishaps by using a commercial electronic cigarette, or simply by switching to protected batteries, the real answer to the question “Why now and why him?” is: Sheer bad luck.

So how likely is it to happen again? As discussed above, li-ion batteries have been known to explode before, and eventually another one will again. Maybe it will be an electronic cigarette, an electric shaver, a video camera, a laptop or even a car. The important thing to remember is that these incidents are tremendously rare. In fact, you are more likely to be struck by lightning than find yourself in poor Tom’s place.

The good news is that none of the major brands of ecigs like BluCigs or Green Smoke have had any reports like these. I’d be willing to bet this guy had a cheaply made ecig, maybe from a gas station or something

The Consumer Advocates for Smoke-Free Alternatives Association (CASAA) has issued a call-to-action, encouraging those who support the vaping community and smoke- free alternatives to go to www.regulations.gov and submit a respectful request that DOT withdraw this proposal. The call-to-action offers guidelines for those who intend to leave a comment in the docket folder, including instructions to leave full names and use respectful language.

DOT’s justification for this proposal is that the health risks imposed by the exhaled vapors are unknown. They seek clarity in the regulation so that the air-quality in aircraft will not be compromised. They also state clearly that nicotine delivery systems should be considered tobacco products; defined as “any product made or derived from tobacco.”

CASAA rebuts these claims with the argument that there is no proven harmful effect of the vapor in a nicotine vaporizer. Furthermore, the toxicology reviews of Dr. Zachary Cohen and Dr. Michael Siegel conclude that the vapor and liquid in nicotine vaporizers are, by far, safer than any analog cigarette. Many would argue that the vapor-producing devices are more akin to asthma-regulating inhalers, or nicotine gum, than to combusted tobacco.

The DOT also fails to take note of the thousands of vapers who have successfully stepped down to doses of flavored vapor that contain zero (0) mg of nicotiine (i.e. V2 Cigs), using e-cigs to fulfill the physical addiction that afflicts most smokers. If, as proposed, all vaporizing devices are considered “tobacco products,” so would those that contain no products made or derived from the tobacco plant at all. Several comments argue that it would be unfair to those who have made the effort to give up nicotine completely to be inconvenienced for having a flavor-habit.

The docket folder for the proposed rule amendment will be taking comments from the public until the fourteenth of November. The site can be accessed through CASAA’s call to action or directly through the government site. The CASAA has asked that vapers and supporters of the alternative nicotine delivery systems comment by the deadline, November 14th; they would like to have at least a thousand comments on their side by then.

Currently, the federal tobacco ban doesn’t apply to e-cigs.

The main reason for the concern of using an electronic cigarette on a flight? Because of the “confusion” it would pose to other passengers and crew. WTF, really?

Obviously, this has created a lot of outrage in the electronic cigarette community. Many e-cig users have given up smoking, and if this new ban were to go into effect, then they would have to use their e-cigs in designated smoking areas at airports…exposing them to the proven harmful effects of traditional tobacco cigarettes.

So this news isn’t that great for e-smokers. However, the rule hasn’t been adopted yet and the public has until November 14th to submit comments on the proposed ban.
