While there continues to be growing concern and skepticism about whether electronic cigarettes will take over the tobacco industry’s market, it is clear that electronic cigarettes are becoming a more inviting option for smokers trying to break their smoking habit.

Chris Weiss, CEO of e-cigarette company NJOY, seems excited about the prospect of e-cigarettes competing with big tobacco companies.

“Our Number 1 goal, our mission, is to make (tobacco) cigarettes obsolete,” Weiss said.

Whether or not electronic cigarettes are the future for smokers is still up in the air. In any case, smokers are finally finding an alternative to smoking that enables them to enjoy nicotine without the nasty side effects associated with tobacco. Big tobacco companies, on the other hand, do have reason to be worried as electronic cigarette companies continue to be a growing presence in the smoking industry.

Senate Majority Whip Adam Driggs, R-Phoenix has proposed a new bill that would make e-cigarettes illegal for minors to own. These new SB 1209 Provisions would:

Devin Gusich, co-owner of Phoenix-based electronic cigarette company Smoking Vapor, explained that selling to minors was prohibited by his company, explaining users of the Smoking Vapor site and kiosk must submit proof of age before purchasing any products. Gusich, like many electronic cigarette supporters, believes e-cigs are one way smokers to can end their addiction to the nicotine found in cigarettes.

“I’m not trying to get people to smoke cigarettes,” he said. “If we were allowed (to sell to minors), I wouldn’t.”

Many smokeless cigarette companies like Smoking Vapor have strict guidelines for the distribution of their products, making it increasingly difficult for minors to try electronic cigarettes but this does not stop people from worrying. Some critics of electronic cigarettes believe their shape, which mimics conventional cigarettes, and their lack of health risks compared to cigarettes may encourage minors to try e-cigs.

“What’s intriguing and potentially challenging about the introduction of these new products is that they are perceived by many people as being safer products and alternatives to traditional, combustible tobacco,” says Robin Mermelstein, director of the UIC institute and principal investigator of the National Cancer Institute-funded study.

Electronic cigarette companies have been quick to counter this argument, claiming their products are made exclusively for adults and not marketed to minors. Fortunately, both Congress and e-cigarette manufacturers can agree on one thing. Regulating the sale of smokeless cigarettes will help keep them out of the hands of youth.

What is propylene glycol?

Propylene glycol is a synthetic chemical used in many household products and has been approved by the FDA for use as a food additive. Prolonged exposure to propylene glycol has been shown to not cause irritation to most people; however, some groups may have an allergy to this synthetic compound.  Electronic cigarette makers have become increasingly aggressive in their advertising in the US, with one company even proclaiming that “Big Tobacco” has met its match. But the burgeoning industry is worried that an onslaught of taxes and regulations could snuff out its recent success.

We’ve posted our case on how the FDA feels about ecigs and it’s true that there have been lots of talks about stricter regulation:

The US Food and Drug Administration is expected to offer guidance in April about how the products should be regulated. The agency lost a legal battle with e-cigarette companies in 2010 after trying to block imports of e-cigarettes and has been spectacle about claims they are not harmful.

It also seems that there are plenty of issues concerning taxes:

Minnesota recently moved to tax e-cigarettes and Hawaii also considered a tax last year.

“The government is going to tax this industry and try to recoup the revenues they’ve lost from cigarettes,” said Eli Alelov, chief executive of Logic, a New Jersey-based e-cigarette company.

Ray Story, chief executive of the Tobacco Vapor Electronic Cigarette Association, warned that tax rises on e-cigarettes would only benefit tobacco companies, to the detriment of public health. One reason consumers have been trying e-cigarettes is because they can be as little as half the price of traditional cigarettes sold by big tobacco companies.

The article also talked about how e-cigarettes have caught Big Tobacco off guard. Not all companies are falling behind: we already reported that Lorillard bought Blu Ecigs for $135m and it appears that RJ Reynolds has started to develop its own electronic cigarette technology. Altria, the US maker of Marlboro, has remained quiet so far but it is widely expected that they will either acquire a current e-cigarette company or launch its own brand soon.

On the commerce side, electronic cigarettes are generating a ton of money for all kinds of businesses, including creative agencies, authors, tobacco companies, and of course the e-cig companies themselves. A whole new niche market has grown up around electronic cigarettes, and creative agencies are jumping into the fray with the same gusto they used to have for Big Tobacco ads.

The days of watching the Marlboro Man broodingly rope his cows are long gone, replaced by trendy e-cig brands like BluCigs, whose ads helpfully inform us that Vapor Is The New Smoke. Blu recently hired hipster actor Stephen Dorff to hang out on a Florida Beach and explain how Blu e-cigs enabled him to kick the habit after more than twenty years of smoking like a fiend. Dorff broods just as well as the Marlboro Man, but without the cows. Blu’s latest ad campaign slogan is “Rise From the Ashes,” which is the e-cig ad equivalent to an ironic t-shirt.

Authors are cashing in on e-cigs, too. The last few months have seen a new crop of books on electronic cigarettes, including one titled The Electronic Cigarette, an Alternative to Tobacco by a Swiss medical professor.

Hmmm, so who else is making money in the $2 billion electronic cigarette market? Ah, yes, Big Tobacco.

Lorillard beat out Altria for the $135 million purchase of Blu e-cigs earlier this year. Industry experts predict that Reynolds American, with its Vuse line of electronic cigarettes, will be a formidable player.

The number of e-cig users is expected to quadruple in the next year, and financial analysts are advising investors to consider plunking their money down on Lorillard and Reynolds American stock.

Altria’s not far behind them but Philip Morris seems much less interested in jumping onto the e-cig bandwagon, preferring instead to concentrate on inventing other smokeless tobacco products that no one seems to know much about.

Bottom line: e-cigs contribute to the health of smokers and the health of the U.S. economy. We need more products like this in the world, especially when they’re on sale.
